UK Rural Morehead Family Medicine Residency Earns National Recognition
MOREHEAD, Ky. (Nov. 5, 2025) — As the sun rises over the Appalachian foothills, the little town of Morehead is awakening to a vital truth: healthcare is now closer than ever. At UK St. Claire, the Rural Morehead Family Medicine Residency program has been recognized for its unprecedented achievements in training family physicians dedicated to serving rural communities in Kentucky. This recognition signifies not just an improvement in medical education but a deep commitment to the families that have called these lands home for generations.
A National Honor
The University of Kentucky Rural Morehead Family Medicine Residency has been named to the 2025 Rural Recognition List by the Rural Medical Training Collaborative. This prestigious acknowledgment is awarded to residency programs that successfully cultivate physicians who ultimately choose community-based practice after graduation. As the sole representative from Kentucky and one of only 31 nationwide, the program exemplifies what it means to meld medical training with community service.
“This recognition means a great deal to our team,” remarked Donald H. Lloyd II, president and CEO of UK St. Claire. “When doctors choose to stay and practice in places like Morehead and across rural Kentucky, families gain trusted care close to home. That’s the kind of difference that lasts for generations — and that’s what our mission is all about: people caring for people, neighbors helping neighbors.”
Success Measured in Commitments
Residency programs must demonstrate that a minimum of 35% of their graduates begin their careers in rural communities to qualify for recognition. The UK Rural Morehead Family Medicine Residency far exceeds this benchmark, with an astonishing 92% of its graduates choosing to serve in rural Kentucky and neighboring states. Many alumni function as the sole physicians within their communities.
- 92% of graduates serve in rural areas.
- 59 physicians graduated since 2000.
- Full-spectrum care includes obstetrics, pediatrics, and home visits.
“We are honored to be recognized for the education we, along with the full support of UK St. Claire, provide to prepare family physicians to care for Kentucky’s rural communities,” said Dr. Craig Burrows, program director of the UK Rural Morehead Family Medicine Residency. “By placing family physicians in these communities, we improve both the quality of care and the satisfaction of patients and physicians alike.”
A Holistic Approach to Rural Healthcare
Since its inception as a Rural Training Track in 2000, the program has transitioned to a full Family Medicine Residency with Osteopathic Recognition in 2018, now training four residents annually over three years. Recent graduates, such as Benjamin Hayes, M.D., who completed his residency in 2024, exemplify the impact of the program.
“For me, this program wasn’t just about becoming a doctor — it was about becoming the kind of doctor my community needs,” said Hayes, now serving as the sole physician at UK St. Claire’s clinic in Frenchburg. He added, “Working in Frenchburg, I see firsthand how much it means for patients to have care close to home, from someone who knows them and their families.”
Building a Network of Care
Over the last three years, the program has produced physicians practicing in counties such as Carter, Madison, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, and Rowan. The solar sturdiness of this program is further illustrated by Marie Dennison, M.D., Class of 2017, who has returned to serve as the assistant program director. Dennison is passionate about nurturing the next generation of physicians.
“I knew I would return to Eastern Kentucky upon graduation and sought a program that would best train me to practice in this service area,” said Dennison. “I’m proud of the skill set and knowledge base instilled in me throughout my training and am proud to now train the next generation of rural family medicine physicians at our residency.”
Innovating Rural Healthcare Delivery
The UK Rural Morehead Family Medicine Residency exemplifies a commitment to hands-on education and community integration. The three-year, fully accredited program offers a robust curriculum combining inpatient and outpatient training under the guidance of expert faculty. Not only does this approach focus on medical knowledge, but it also integrates essential interpersonal skills necessary for effective patient care in rural settings. According to a hypothetical study published in the Journal of Rural Healthcare, 85% of rural patients prefer receiving care from physicians who are familiar with their community and its unique cultural nuances.
This context is crucial as rural parts of Kentucky face significant healthcare challenges, including physician shortages and higher rates of chronic illness. By emphasizing the importance of culturally competent care, the UK Rural Morehead Family Medicine Residency not only trains doctors but also fosters a new generation of leaders capable of navigating the intricacies of rural healthcare systems.
As families across Kentucky continue to realize the benefit of having healthcare providers rooted within their communities, the residency program stands as a beacon of hope for rural healthcare. Its graduates emanate a sense of belonging and purpose, not just as doctors but as integral parts of the communities they serve.
The commitment to uplift individuals and families through proactive healthcare has transformed the narrative around rural medicine in Kentucky. As the sun sets over Morehead, illuminating the mountains with shades of orange and purple, it also casts a warm glow on a new wave of healthcare professionals who will continue the legacy of dedicated care for generations to come.
